This perspective piece published in the New England Journal of Medicine promotes investing in the community health workforce as a means to help confront systemic racism and social determinants of health in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors of the piece argue that integrating community health workers into existing health systems can promote better patient advocacy among providers, and help improve and maintain better health outcomes in the communities they serve.
